Abstract

This thesis focused on examining the actual status and development direction of ceramic raw materials conducted by the ceramics raw material investigation department, a core department of the central laboratory established in Japanese colonial era, and analyzing the essential purpose and performance of these investigation details. The ceramics department attempted to analyze and test excellent raw materials buried in Joseon scientifically and systematically and apply them to various ceramics activities according to the results. This perspective was already formed before the Japanese occupation and was amplified dramatically after the occupation. This is also reflected in the fact that ceramic raw material investigations accounted for the largest proportion of the ceramics department's work. However, this investigation did not stop at simply producing prototypes through ingredient analysis, and the scope of the investigation caused considerable problems while overseeing distribution and outflow. In other words, the production site of first-class raw materials from Joseon during this period was the area most closely watched by the ceramics department, and these raw materials were generally linked to the supply and demand of Japanese from Japan and outflow to Japan. Workers of Korean ceramics companies, who relied on grade 2 and 3 raw materials relatively, were small, and after the 1930s, the supply and demand situation was smooth only for production sites supported by ceramics cooperatives or ceramics unions. The process of collectively investigating various ceramic raw materials produced in Joseon, including white porcelain, pottery, and Onggi clay, was carried out in depth for the first time in history, with repeated experiments and high-tech technology being mobilized. However, the results of this survey had little effect on Joseon ceramics, and most of them are evaluated as tasks that left many limitations based on the Japanese ceramics policy.
