초록

This paper analyses the relation between the firm’s investment, financial constraints and ownership structures in Vietnam using financial data of 185 manufacturing firms listed on Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) and Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HOSE) between 2007 and 2015. Our findings are as follows. First, contrary to commonly accepted wisdom, private ownership has not resulted in an increase in the investment of equitised state-owned enterprises or private firms. Second, an increase in the foreign ownership share in a firm leads to higher investment of the firm. Last, the higher the proportion of state ownership share in a firm is, the less sensitive to cash flow its investment is, implying that state ownership weakens financial constraints a firm faces. It can be interpreted that the state has had the function of distributing financial resources and has acted as a fund provider to so-called state-controlled firms.
