Abstract

Abusive supervision has been known to have negative effect on subordinates’ attitudes, behavior and psychological distress. The purpose of this study is to investigate the direct effect of abusive supervision on subordinates’ job stress and the moderating effect of proactivity between abusive supervision and subordinates’ job stress. To test our hypotheses, we collected multiphase data in hospitals and public firms. Results showed that abusive supervision was positively related to subordinates’ job stress and subordinates’ level of proactivity lessened the negative relationship between abusive supervision and subordinates’ job stress. This study enlarged our understanding of abusive supervision by extending psychological distress’s study domain (i.e., negative effect of abusive supervision on job stress). And this study can also provide practical implications for managers by suggesting the subordinates’ proactivity as a coping strategy which can mitigate the negative effect of abusive supervision.
