Abstract
Previous research on envy revealed that envy has negative effects on individuals and organizations. However, previous studies have mainly studied malicious envy, which is one aspect of envy, and there is a lack of research in relation to benign envy, which is another aspect. In addition, the sample of the study is limited to workers of private companies, and there is a lack of research on the situational factors that moderate the results of envy. In this study, using 208 public officials, we examined the effect of malicious envy on interpersonal deviance, the effect of benign envy on task performance, and whether the distributive justice has a moderating effect on these direct effects based on the attribution model of justice. The results showed that malicious envy has a positive effect on interpersonal deviance and benign envy on task performance. And distributive justice appeared to moderate each relationship. Specifically, when distributive justice is high, the positive relationship between malicious envy and interpersonal deviance is strengthened whereas the positive relationship between benign envy and task performance is weakened. The results of this study are considered to have contributed to the expansion and generalization of existing envy studies by empirically analyzing the effects of malicious envy and benign envy on interaction with distributive justice. In particular, according to the attribution model of justice, it is meaningful that the high level of distributive justice does not always show a positive effect.
