초록

This study is on the reaction of children readers to songs and poems of Yoon Seok Jung and Lee Won Soo who had one hundredth anniversary of the birth. It aims to figure out empirical reaction of children in the process of reading and discussing poems of the two poets freely. It is not aiming to generalize the reaction, but aiming to explore qualitative characteristics of reading reaction of children readers. Based on the interaction between texts and readers on poems of Yoon and Lee, the characteristics of children reaction have been demonstrated as follows. First of all, reaction on the poems of Yoon Seok Jung can be divided into two. First, children felt fun in his oral poetic words with singing and reacting on rhythm and tune actively. But, after reading twice or three times in the same poem, they showed various emotional feelings such as loneliness, joy and hope while imagining the experience of the poet. Second, children could understand the context of poems and communicate with them based on their own experience and reality experience in a fictional playing world which the poet draws. Accordingly, the upper grades children could understand the formative characteristics of Yoon’s poems with word play and easy following, and also could feel empathy to the context of the poet, while comparing fictional situation with their own playing experience. Second, the readers’ reaction on the poems of Lee Won Soo was actualization and internalization. Specific and delicate descriptions like ‘Red sunset’ in 「Bo-o-ya Nen-ne-yo」, ‘feel hot on the back and soaked with sweat / baby, baby get down, I will pick you up a flower’ in 「Forsythia」and ‘No, sir,’and ‘Might be missing’ in 「Old hat」 become actualized into poetic context through readers’ imagination. And common experience of readers and poetic speakers form a sense of missing and regret which makes people to be compassionate with others’ sorrow and makes children feel mature with understanding their own lives. And, from sensible descriptions like ‘whispering Youngi’s saying and soft Youngi‘s hand looks like to be caught’ in 「Daritmok」and ‘Warm, cool, sweet, sour, soft, tight, horrible but nice’ in 「Wild berry」,readers showed active reaction of emotion with exciting but fearful with a sense of longing. The active reaction and acceptance of Lee’s poetic world which described the world of a mature boy demonstrates how the poems have close relation with children readers in upper grades. Third, the preference on poems of Yoon and Lee shows how far poems and readers can make close relationship to each other. In a comparative discussion, the common reaction of children was that they wanted to experience ‘joy and fun’ as a positive experience through poems in which they could share bright and fun poems and also joy of play. Fourth, although readers in the discussion reacted to the internal characteristics of the works initially, they also experience the change of emotion while they attempted to interpret the context, contents and characters in the poem with their periodic context. In particular, in the first stage of study, attended children felt difficult to ‘understand words that express the context of period or reality.’ But, as time went by, they could embody the meaning of poetic words in the context of the time, and could internalize it comparing with their own situation, which made them to have closer relation with the poems of Yee. Since then, in the comparative discussion, they showed their extended way of thinking from ‘dark and sorrow poem is not fun, but difficult to read’ to ‘it is not all about fun and bright in the poem’, ‘I feel comfortable when I talk sorrow feeling in the poem’, ‘both dark poem and bright poem made me think a lot’. Finally, as shown in the preliminary survey, majority reading poem is made through school class. Therefore, it is utmost important to put good works and make children read them. As this study demonstrates, two poets’works could sufficiently communicate with children readers who live here and now from the fact that they could accept poems of Yoon and Lee in a positive and active manner. Accordingly, if the fixed assessment of the two poets gains variety and balance, their poems and songs may be good texts for literature education as the classic for the modern and contemporary Korean children’s literature.
