일본 근대 전환기 『쿠오레』 번역에 나타난 식민주의 연구 - 1902년에 출간된 스기타니 다이스이(杉谷代水)의 『학동일지(學童日誌)』를 중심으로 -

Abstract

“CUORE”, a novel published in Italy in 1886, is a children’s novel written during the construction of the Italian nation-state. Based on the ideology of nationalism as a whole, this work has a strong and educational message that has been reborn in contemporary Italy as a text that implements the theme of “creating a nation”. Japan started to explore the path to modernity because of the national crisis threatened by the Western powers, and “CUORE” was introduced to Japan through translation in the early modern era. “CUORE” has been accepted in Japan as a textual vehicle to implement the formation of a modern national state and to promote the national consciousness of the time. In order to achieve independence, Japan proposed the slogan of “leaving Asia and entering Europe”, which was the first to promote Japan’s integration into the West, but then gradually changed to an imperialist consciousness. The “Schoolboy’s Journal(1902)” is an adaptation of “CUORE” by Sugitani Daisui, in which he replaces the “Italian Unification War” with the “Sino-Japanese War”, thus reflecting Japan’s sense of imperialism. Also, in the “Schoolboy’s Journal”, which completed the topic of “creating a nation” in modern Japan, a ‘Story of the Month’ called “Japanese” describes a Japanese speaking Korean boy who became a sentry for a Japanese soldier. The story of a Korean child as the main character is found in the Japanese text on the subject of “creating a nation”, where the Korean child is directly treated as a subject of the Japanese emperor, which reflects the Japanese sense of colonialism. The purpose of this study is to understand Japan’s imperialist consciousness through Sino-Japanese War and to examine the colonialist consciousness contained in the Japanese through the observation of the “portrait of a group of Korean teenagers”.
