이 연구는 2021년 뉴베리 메달 수상작 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』(태 켈러, 2021)에 나타난 마술적 사실주의의 활용과 의의를 분석한 연구이다. 마술적 사실주의는 1925년에 프란츠 로가 후기 표현주의 미술 비평에 처음으로 사용하였다. 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』은 마술적 사실주의를 사용하여 작가가 재구성한 한국 설화를 소개하고 설화에 나오는 호랑이를 주인공 릴리의 세계에 자연스럽게 불러들였다. 이외에도 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』에서 마술적 사실주의는 마술 세계와 현실 세계의 경계를 초월한 마법 호랑이와 릴리의 교류를 묘사하는 데 효과적으로 사용되었다. 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』은 아동문학에서 마술적 사실주의 활용 가능성을 보여주었다.
Abstract
This study analyzed the use and significance of magical realism in When You Trap a Tiger (by Tae Keller, 2021), the 2021 Newbery Medal winner. In 1925, Franz Roh used the term, Magical realism for post-expressionism art criticism. When You Trap a Tiger used magical realism to introduce Korean folktales that the author recreated and spontaneously brought the magical tiger from the folktale into the protagonist Lily’s world. Besides, magical realism was used effectively to describe the magical tiger and Lily’s interactions, transcending the boundaries between the magic world and the real world. When You Trap a Tiger showed the possible use of magical realism in children’s literature.
