Abstract

This study was conducted as part of a research project exploring the experiences and self–direction of child and adolescent readers involved in the selection of children’s literature contests. The study addressed the following questions: What is the current status of domestic children’s literature awards and contests? How are domestic children’s literature contests, in which child and adolescent readers participate, conducted? Children’s literature awards recognize excellent literary works or authors from previously published materials. This study examines domestic children’s literature awards held at least 10 times and still active after 2020. In contrast, children’s literature contests recognize unpublished manuscripts, with winning entries published as books. We considered children’s literature contests hosted by media organizations, foundations, and publishers and discussed their characteristics. This study also focuses on children’s literature contests that have introduced methods to allow child and adolescent readers to participate in the judging process. Focusing on the The Changbi Prize for Young Adult Fiction, which operates a adolescent judging panel, as well as the Story King, Dasaetsu Bang Jeong–hwan Literature contest, and Wisdom House Children and Adolescent Fantasy Literature Award, which operates child judging panels, we examined the respective contests’ operation methods and the judging process of child and adolescent readers. Follow–up study plans to conduct an empirical study to incorporate the voices and responses of child and adolescent readers who participate in children’s literature contests and discuss how they can grow into mature readers, thereby increasing their subjectivity.
