한국 영화 〈백사부인〉의 ‘백사전(白蛇傳)’에 대한 변용 양상

Abstract

From the late 1950s to the early 1960s, there were as many as four movies based on thefamous Chinese folklore Madam White Snake released in East Asian region, including Japan andHongkong’s co-production Byakufujin No Yoren(1956), Japan’s first colour animated feature filmMadam White Snake(1958), Korean movie Baeksabuin(1960) and Hongkong’s movie Madam WhiteSnake(1962). It looks that a craze of Madam White Snake in East Asian region was created at thattime. Therefore, ‘White snake’ has been a common cultural factor in East Asian region at thistime. However, as a member of the so-called Madam White Snake series, Korean movieBaeksabuin was always ignored in the study of the East Asian movies based on Madam WhiteSnake. In consideration of this problem, this paper aims to interpret this movie text that issignificant but always forgotten. Hopefully, this paper can make supplement for the study of theinternational movies based on Madam White Snake. This paper takes the Korean movie Baeksabuin as the core study object to focus on thevariation in the reception process to Chinese folklore Madam White Snake. And on this basis, withcomparison of this movie text with the other movie ones of the same material during the sameperiod and combination of the international situation of the times, domestic social situation ofKorea, and characteristics of director Sin Sangok’s movie creation, it explores the mechanism andunderlying reasons of the variation in the acceptance of Madam White Snake.
