Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the serum levels of minerals and trace elements in the infants and young children. Methods : Sixty healthy infants and children aged 8∼28 months were selected in Seoul area. Serum concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper were measured by ICP-spectrophotometer. Serum concentrations of minerals and trace elements compared according to early feeding pattern. Results : Between 8 to 12 months, the mean serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper were 10.3±18.1㎎/㎗, 8.0±6.2㎎/㎗, 3.0±0.8㎎/㎗, 80.2± 23.6㎍/㎗, 127.5±18.9㎍/㎗, and 109.3±18.1㎍/㎗ respectively. Serum concentrations of minerals and trace elements aged 13 to 28 months averaged as follows, calcium 9.6±1.2㎎/㎗, phosphorus 6.7±2.6㎎/㎗, magnesium 3.2±1.2㎎/㎗, iron 89.4±39.5㎍/㎗, zinc 137.3±21.4㎍/㎗ and copper 114.3±22.5㎍/㎗. There was no significant difference in serum minerals and trace elements according to the early feeding pattern except that serum iron level of breast-feeding group was significantly lower than formula and mixed feeding group. Conclusions : The results of this study showed that the nutritional status of minerals and trace elements of the subjects was relatively favorable.
