Abstract
This paper analyzes the historical evolution and connotations associated with the female figure, Cao E, during the Eastern Han period (25-220). It emphasizes texts dating from the 11th to the 17th centuries. The narrative of Cao E, initially imbued with shamanistic connotation, underwent a historical transformation by Confucian appropriation, resulting in the attribution of two distinct identities: filial daughter and deity. Various factors, including the perceptions and conceptualizations held by the court, local elites, and worshippers, collectively contributed to the formation of a body of knowledge surrounding Cao E. During the Song period, Cao E received official recognition as a deity from the imperial court, yet diverse interpretations of her character persisted among different agents. During the Ming dynasty, the elite class began to challenge her status as a deity, endeavoring to portray her as a female figure in the everyday space of the era. But by the late Ming, local elites embedded regional localities within the imperial rule by resurrecting Cao E. Concurrently, they preserved a modified Cao E narrative derived from folk cult systems, offering an alternative standard.
