Abstract

The engravings of the Eightieth birthday celebration is an artificial street scene from the Qianlong Emperor's eightieth birthday party held in August 1790. I summarized the performance scenes included in the entire engravings, and as a result of summarizing the performance aspects included in the engravings, it was possible to see that the core of this work lies in various performances on the super-large street stage. I tracked down the historical context of this work, noting that it has the characteristics of an "urban festival" that shares joy with citizens and an "international festival" that shows off thestrength of the country. As a result, it was confirmed that this work is in line with the tradition of ‘Pingleguan’ performance in the Han Dynasty and the tradition of Emperor's birthday Celebration and urban festivals that began with Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty and began in earnest during the Song Dynasty. I think the significance of the history of performance that this painting can have can be found in the following two. First, this work has the highest status among the previous dynastic attempts to decorate Taiping with performances. Second, it has excellent data value as it is a painting that shows the broadest aspects of performances in the late 18th century.
