본고는 ‘전환(지반 뒤집기)’을 중심으로 〈접는 도시〉 속 베이징의 도시 생태계를 재구성하고, 포스트휴먼·지속가능한 발전 시대 인간의 입지 문제를 고찰한다. 전환은 도시 공간을 확장하여 기계화·자동화로 인한 대량 실업 인구를 수용할 수 있도록 해준다. 전환이 수반하는 시공간의 차등적 분배는 경제 활력을 유지하는 동시에 에너지·환경 문제를 해결할 수 있도록 하여 베이징의 지속가능한 발전에 기여한다. 하지만 생식의 가능성을 지닌 모든 관계로부터 배제된 제3공간 거주자들의 모습은, 그 자체로 하나의 거대한 포스트휴먼인 도시 베이징이 잉여 인간의 자연도태를 무의식적으로 욕망하고 있음을 보여준다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 수양딸 탕탕을 향한 라오다오의 공감과 온정은 인간 입지의 축소라는 미증유의 인류사적 위기에 대한 해결 가능성을 제시한다.
Abstract
This paper reconstructs the urban ecology of Beijing depicted in “Folding Beijing” and explores human space in the age of posthumanism and sustainable development, focusing on the “change.” The change allows the city to expand its urban space and thereby accommodate a large number of unemployed people resulted by the mechanization and automation of production. The differential distribution of time and space accompanied by the change enables Beijing to maintain its economic vitality and solve energy and environmental problems, which contributes to the city’s sustainable development. But the residents of the third space who are completely excluded from all possible reproductive relationships show that the city, in and of itself a huge posthuman, unconsciously desires the extinction of the surplus humans. Nevertheless, Lao Dao’s empathy and compassion towards his foster daughter Tangtang suggest a possible solution for the reduction of human space, an unprecedented crisis of humanity.
