Abstract
This paper argues that the world depicted in Lust, Caution(Se, jie) is not inclined toward either ‘lust’ or ‘caution’ but rather centers on recording the events and emotions that occur at the border or on its periphery, thereby opening up significant meanings and spaces. Written during the Cold War period, the novel narrates half a day in the life of a female agent who fails in her mission to assassinate a pro-Japanese collaborator in Shanghai under the Wang Jingwei puppet regime during the Sino-Japanese War. Through an analysis of the narrative’s exploration of unstable boundaries, the paper identifies several focal points reconsidered by Eileen Chang: the use of a comma in the title, the unique protagonist as an amateur female agent, a rethinking of “patriotism,” and the recording of emotional disquiet. Synthesizing these reconsidered elements, Lust, Caution emerges as a narrative that reflects not a binary choice between lust/caution, desire/ration, individual/nation, or gender/ideology but rather a contemplation on the era or system that fostered such dichotomous thinking, behaviors, and judgments. This boundary -problematizing perspective also reveals the character of the system and era contained within the narrative while simultaneously foregrounding the existence and voices of ordinary individuals who live their lives while questioning the conditions marginalized or obscured by this system.
