모옌의 《술의 나라》는 기괴하고 혼란스러우며 그로테스크한, 모옌 소설 중 이질적인 작품이다. 이 작품은 중국에서 별로 주목받지 못해왔는데 그 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 내용상으로, 이 작품이 다루고 있는 ‘식인’과 ‘부패한 관리’라는 소재가 중국문화와 정치에 대한 적나라한 비판으로 여겨져서 중국 사회에 수용되지 못하기 때문이고, 둘째, 예술상으로, 다중 서사의 사용, 환상적 이야기의 무질서한 배치 등 그 실험성으로 인해서 대중의 접근이 용이하지 않기 때문이다. 하지만 본 논문은 바로 이 기괴하고 혼란스러운 특징 때문에 이 작품에 주목하고자 한다. 이 작품의 독해는 작품의 이 기괴스러운 특징을 어떻게 풀이할 것인가에 달려 있는데, 이는 곧 소설 텍스트의 성격을 어떻게 볼 것인가 하는 문제와 관련된다. 이에 대해 기존의 독해는 《술의 나라》 텍스트를 허와 실이 상호 보완하는 글쓰기로 보는 입장으로부터 사실적, 환상적, 알레고리적 작품으로 해석하는 입장이 있어 왔다. 이 문제에 대해, 본 연구는 이 작품을 ‘환상적’ 작품이라고 보고 이 작품이 담고 있는 새로운 의미를 밝히고자한다. ‘환상적’ 작품이란 집단무의식을 드러내는 ‘환상’을 전달하고 있는 작품을 일컫기 위해 C.G.융이 사용한 말로서, 이러한 작품은 그 시대의 의식적 전망에 대한 보상적 조정을 보여주고 있다. 《술의 나라》가 보여주는 기괴하고 혼란스러우며 그로테스크함은 바로 ‘환상적’ 작품이 지닌 특징이며, ‘환상적’ 작품으로서 《술의 나라》에 대한 분석심리학적 해석은 이 작품에 담겨 있는 시대적 메시지를 밝힌다는 데에 그 의의가 있다.
Abstract
Mo Yan’s The Republic of Wine is a grotesque, chaotic, and unsettling work that stands out as an anomalous piece among his novels. It has garnered relatively little attention in China, primarily because its narrative, focusing on “cannibalism” and “corrupt officials,” has been interpreted as a stark critique of Chinese culture and politics. Additionally, its artistic experimentation—such as the use of multiple narratives and the disorderly arrangement of fantastical stories—further contributes to its marginalization. However, the very grotesque and chaotic characteristics of this work are the reasons this study focuses on it. Existing interpretations of the novel have sought to address its distinctive nature, with perspectives ranging from viewing it as a realistic, fantastical, or allegorical work to seeing its writing as a dialectical interplay of illusion and reality. This study approaches the novel as a “visionary” work, aiming to uncover the new meanings it contains. The term “visionary,” as used by C.G. Jung, refers to works that convey “visions” emerging from the collective unconscious. Such works reflect compensatory adjustments by the unconscious in response to the conscious outlook of age. A depth interpretation of The Republic of Wine based on analytical psychology theory will illuminate the unconscious compensatory adjustments to the conscious outlook of the age, ultimately revealing the work’s embedded message for this age.
