Abstract
This study explores the literary representation of the “Hong Kong diaspora” that has emerged since 2019, focusing on Chan Mit’s poetry collection The Book of Turmoil (離亂經). Unlike earlier Chinese diasporas defined by physical migration, this new diaspora arises from a spiritual rupture—a separation and farewell from “Hong Kong” as an idea and affective homeland. By personifying “Hong Kong” as an active subject, Chan Mit resists the accumulated loss of agency under colonial and political authority. Through this poetic strategy, “Hong Kong” becomes an embodiment of Judith Butler’s concept of “precarious life,” fragile yet demanding recognition. The diasporic figures in the poems inhabit a liminal state, in Victor Turner’s sense, caught between departure and settlement, continuity and loss. The Book of Turmoil articulates Hongkongers’ existential condition through the motifs of residence and movement. Images of high-rise buildings, ferries, and trains evoke both attachment and dislocation. Ultimately, the study argues that the Hong Kong diaspora does not signify the end of Hong Kong but redefines its boundaries through the embodied lives and actions of its people, reimagining “Hong Kong” as a lived, linguistic, and ethical space.
