Abstract

To understand the mind, we must expand our scope of understanding to encompass not only our consciousness but also our body, surrounding environment, and even the entire universe. According to modern scientific achievements, quantum mechanics has revealed that in both the microscopic world and the macroscopic world like the universe, the observer and the observed—that is, the observing consciousness and the object of observation—can never be separated or exist independently of the observing consciousness. Everything operates in mutual relationships. This perspective moves away from attempts to view consciousness and objects, or self and world, dichotomously, as well as from attempts to reduce all human conscious activities to brain functions or physical entities. Instead, it encourages understanding everything through the lens of relationships. This aligns with the Buddha’s explanatory method of negating substance and explaining through relationships via non-self and dependent origination. It also corresponds with the Madhyamaka school’s explanation of emptiness(śūnyatā) as dependent origination and lack of inherent nature, the Yogācāra school’s concept of consciousness-only which posits that not only our everyday consciousness but also our body and ecological environment are all results of the transformation of the fundamental consciousness(ālaya-vijñāna), and the Huayan school’s dharmadhātu pratītyasamutpāda which, from the perspective of non-discrimination, reveals that the dharmakāya of the Tathāgata is replete and the entire universe is interdependent and interacting through dependent origination. Therefore, we can confirm the need for an integrated understanding of mind-life-ecology, including our brain and body, humans and environment, encompassing not only traditional Buddhist thoughts like Madhyamaka, Yogācāra, and Huayan, but also phenomenology, cognitive science, modern physics, and biology. Particularly, this integrated understanding needs to be experientially grasped in our daily lives as well as through physical observations of the conscious activities of living organisms. The text emphasizes the need for middle way practice to support this understanding. Middle way practice involves studying to recover and return to the original mind of non-discrimination, observing phenomena as they are, closely examining the manifestations of consciousness, bodily life phenomena, and all phenomena of the ecological environment. It also involves purifying the unconscious to change bodily habits and actively engaging in the study of transforming the surrounding ecological environment. Through such middle way practice, we need to deepen our integrated understanding of mind-life-ecology.
