Abstract

So far, Western-centered literary studies have overlooked the influence of Islamic Arab culture on the Decameron. This study examines the fact that Decameron, which shows the exchange between East and West, was strongly influenced by Islamic culture in terms of the structure and content of the frame, and confirmed Boccaccio's attitude with an open mind to other cultures. The Decameron frame structure was a new type of fiction that could not be seen before by medieval writers, so it piqued the interest of contemporaries and later had a great influence on Western literature. The frame structure, which Boccaccio had a great influence on European literature through Decameron, appears to be influenced by the 'Sinbad' Arabic oral literature, and it is estimated that The Seven Elders of Rome, a version of Sinbad, was introduced in Italy in 13th century. The common characteristics of Decameron and The Seven Elders of Rome are that they delay the story to escape death and that the plot and content are interdependent. Disciplina clericalis, written by Petrus Alphonsi, written in the early 12th century, also had several Arabic sources and had a great influence on the Decameron. In addition, the garden ie a place for pleasant conversations with delicious food, fruit, wine, fountains, trees and flowers and streams is a garden like heaven on earth, and is the influence of Islam. Unlike many Westerners of his time, hostile to the Islamic world, Boccaccio viewed the Islamic city as a place of prosperity, luck and love and portrayed Arab figures such as Saladin as large and generous figures. Of course, in tales like Alatiel and Alibek there is a distorted and Western-centered view of Asian women as sex objects with exotic charm, but compared to the people of the time she showed a fairly tolerant and open attitude towards the Islamic world. It is true that Boccaccio expressed in the Decameron the ideal of an open world without borders, a world beyond cultural and religious conflicts, and spoke of a peaceful coexistence based on the mutual understanding of being.
