Abstract
Elio Vittorini was born in Syracuse in 1908, when the Belle Époque was at its peak. He lived through World War I as a child and World War II as an adult. He lived through the anxiety and confusion of adolescence and twenties, fully experiencing the meaning of human existence and the anxiety of existence. Through the study of the author and the novels that survived the confusion of an upside-down world, we try to reflect on the direction of our current lives. In the present, when we face crises that shake the foundations of society, such as global warming and population decline, every living being must live with the lack of understanding and the offense to existence from different meanings and perspectives. We have encountered material abundance, but in a society of tension and anxiety, we must continue to explore the value of human existence and justice. In this context, we examine the value of human existence through the crimes committed against human beings. We also study pain and unfulfilled desires through the protagonist who finds the cause of problems in human relationships during childhood. We examine the value of the present in the writings of Vittorini, who argues that the anti-fascist battle of the Resistance makes sense in opposing the disintegration of the desire for happiness and the insults inflicted on existence in fascist reality. This study focuses on the journey of a young worker who, after hearing Enne2's call to improve, sets out toward a better human existence through a chance encounter with a young German soldier. Obsessed by the duty to eliminate the resistance leader, Canenero, Enne2 prioritizes external public relations activities with his comrades, yet is unable to abandon his personal and emotional relationship with Berta, which is realistically unfeasible. But small changes in the young worker's behavior open up new horizons of existential value. The young worker's actions reveal a reactionary response to reality, which brings about a dialectical shift in the meaning of existence. When the evil that has dominated and governed history, committed inhuman folly, and humiliated humanity, is rejected and a return to pure humanity occurs, the meaning of human existence begins to change. A fundamental shift has occurred: the fight is not for revenge, but for freedom, to break the chains of oppressive control. Despite the common goal of resisting the Nazi-fascists and the unitary direction of action, the different values of rhizomatic human existence that emerge at crucial moments can be interpreted as the Creative Evolution described by Deleuze.
