초록

This study evaluated the theoretical, technical, and market potential of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy in Gyeonggi Province, a region with the highest electricity demand in South Korea. Using two different solar irradiance datasets, we assessed how the magnitude of irradiance influenced the PV potential estimates. The theoretical and technical potentials responded linearly to changes in irradiance values, while the market potential exhibited nonlinear behavior owing to economic viability constraints. Our results revealed that the market potential based on one of the irradiance datasets was approximately 6.5 times that based on the other, thus demonstrating the sensitivity of potential estimates to the choice of input data. Furthermore, we analyzed the spatial disparities across municipalities and found that the technical potential correlated with administrative area, whereas the market potential correlated inversely with the population density. The actual PV generation in 2023 reached only 4.7% of the estimated market potential. Thus, our findings underscore the importance of data reliability and spatial context in renewable energy planning. They also highlight the need for policy efforts to overcome economic, regulatory, and social barriers, especially in high-demand areas such as Gyeonggi Province.
