Traditional Music Education of Kindergarten by Percussion Instrument Ch'oe Mi-hyang In kindergarten education, music activity has been ignored in comparison with other educational activities. Music activity, we can say, is enough in the meaning of quantity, however, the quality of it is below than our expectation. In formal aspects of music education, musical instrument such as piano or dancing is adapted as a educational method when beginning and ending of each kindergarten classes. However, we cannot say that it is a true musical education and activity. Every musical educations in the boundary of theory of music, singing, creative activity, reading music, sight singing, music dictation meed to be systematically educated. Moreover, almost of theories come form foreign countries. Music in kindergarten is mostly concentrated on traditional folk songs and plays. In addition, for events of kindergarten, four percussion ensemble (samulnori 사물놀이) and Korean folk dances are included as a formal performance. However, nearly all of them are temporary and just for one-time display. In the field of kindergarten's musical education, systematic data of theory is very hard to find , though many teachers are teaching a percussion instrument to students. Therefore, in this material, we'd like to study traditional music theory, musical instrument, creation, reading music, playing of it through samulnori (especially in the focus of changgu 장구). When we study these theories as a year-round program, we can teach to infants, first of all, the Korean traditional music, and on the accumulation of it, we can improve the grade of Korean traditional music. Secondly, they can recognize the dignity of Koreans and feel the cultural understandings. In third, as a knowledge of Korean culture and understanding of self-conceit, young generation will drive their dreams up in the future.
