Abstract

Various percussive instruments are used in diversified manners in Korean traditional music. However, at the education field in Korea, there are overwhelmingly many foreign percussive instruments. Therefore, this article examined the genres and extensions in the kinds of Korean traditional percussive instruments and organized the variety of techniques and aspects of possible replacement for percussive instruments in everyday life in order to look for ways to apply them in school education field. The following are the results. Firstly, more instruments were found being used besides the instruments that were already known. They were some instruments which were considered shaman instruments and given little attention, and the everyday instruments that general people used. These instruments, by their nature, are small in size and low in volume which are the features that make them appropriate tools for school education where many students play them together at the same time. We need to change the existing awareness of academics about the existing percussive instruments in order to look for ways to actively apply percussive instruments. Secondly, some cases were found where there are different sizes and shapes of one instrument or there are different techniques for an instrument. Especially, using different sticks or techniques is found to change the tone of music and the difficulty of techniques. So far, instruments such as Janggu were constrained to the identical application of art music, which suggests the necessity to play and apply in various manners. Thirdly, there is an imperative need to replace the foreign percussive instruments that are currently used in music class in elementary school. Developing and supplying education instruments should be carried out by national agencies. Various education Korean instruments with appropriate volume and with better sound for classroom use should be developed. Fourthly, percussive instruments were used primarily for rhythm education. However, music with dance should be created in order to use instruments in various musical activities. For example, in folk songs, instrument sounds are used as lyrics and instrumental accompaniment is used in folk songs. These features should be acknowledged in the application of percussive music in singing activities. In addition, percussive instruments are relatively easy to play and this feature makes them a good tool for creative expression. Lastly, the current aspects of everyday life musical instruments should be well-organized and based on this tradition, various materials and tools should be used for making an instrument. Observing existing instruments and making a new one will be more effective when they are associated with other subjects such as math, science, and art. Also, using materials that are easy to find should make it possible to relate the class with social studies and practical course.
