Abstract
Zheng 箏, koto 琴 and kayagŭm 伽倻琴 are the representative plucked stringed instruments in East Asia, respectively China, Japan and Korea. These instruments share some of the basic features including morphology, structure, materials, and playing techniques. Moreover, these instruments have changed over time throughout socio-cultural and historical processes. Especially in modern era witnesses dramatic changes of musical construction and morphology of three zithers. Purposes of the modification of three zithers vary including for a new sonic experience, wide range of repertoires, musical achievement and by the need of composers and compositions, to accomplish socialist ideologies, and most of all achieving modernity. This paper investigates modification process and historical development of three zithers in China, Taiwan, Japan, South and North Korea and Yanbian. Zheng, koto and kayagŭm have changed along with socio-cultural, political and historical processes, sometimes those changes were either dramatic or small scale. Especially zheng and koto have changed several times and was quite often and obvious than Korean kayagŭm. Modernization process in all societies has involved modification of traditional instruments, and these were quite dramatic compared to those of earlier times. Musicians, composers and manufacturers have initiated modern instrument modification during the 1930s for Chinese zheng, during the 1920s for Japanese koto and during the 1960s for Korean kayagŭm. Those modification have almost completed during the 1960s for Chinese and Japanese. In North Korea and Yanbian, modification started earlier than South Korea. North Korea began during the 1930s and completed during the 1960s and 1970s. In case of North Korea and China, modification and standardization of the instrument was promoted as a national project to fulfill socialist ideology. The modification of kayagŭm in South Korea began actively during the 1980s, which is comparatively later than any other regions. Thus modification of the kayagŭm in modern era is more radical compared to other two. Chinese zheng and Japanese koto have evolved gradually throughout history, but kayagŭm has not. This fact also implies that the kayagŭm of South Korea has the most oldest and closest to the original plucked zither form in Asia up until recently, this also should be reevaluated. Furthermore, social meanings of new instruments in Asia within historical and cultural contexts need further investigation in the field of organology, ethnomusicology and historical-musicology.
