Abstract
In this paper, the author examined the works and contributions of several important early ethnomusicologists and folk music scholars. Since Mr. Cecil Sharp collected numerous English folksongs throughout the U. K., the folk music have been preserved in the U. K. Not only he collected it, he also notated those folksongs on the five lines staffs notation to transmit it with music score to the next generations. These became a very significant heritages from the past in the English folk music. In the field of ethnomusicology, throughout the works by many influential scholars such as Prof. John Blacking, the academic world of ethnomusicology has been expanded and developed. The works by Prof. Blacking and his followers can be found in this paper. Not only in the U. K., but also in Europe, the Department of Ethnomusicology at the College of Music in SOAS (University of London) is the biggest place to study and research all kinds of subjects in ethnomusicology. So, the author also provideㄴ here several research results of the important issues in ethnomusicology that are discussed and studied at SOAS. The author hopes that these information could be helpful in the field of research about Korean traditional music.
