한국 사찰건축의 악기 심볼리즘 소고- 조선후기 사찰의 천장 주악도를 중심으로 -

본 연구는 한국 전통사찰의 법당 천장에 그려진 음악관련 도상, 특히 주악도 형식의 천장 별화(別畵)에 관한 의미론적 연구이다. 불교에서 음악은 곧 부처의 공덕에 대한 찬탄의 상징일 뿐 아니라 부처에 대한 10종 공양(供養：pjan) 중의 한 가지였기 때문에 단순한 엔터테인먼트 이상의 위치를 차지한다. 법당은 곧 부처의 법을 전하는 장소이기도 하지만, 동시에 중생이 법문을 경청하며 부처의 덕을 찬송하는 곳이기도 하다. 또한 전통적으로 종교건축에서 천장은 하늘을 상징하기 때문에 법당의 천장에 묘음(妙音)과 천상의 음악을 그려 넣어 부처가 삼매(三昧)에 든 순간을 도상적으로 표현하려는 시도는 법화경을 중시하는 북방불교의 교리상 지극히 자연스러운 발상이며, 오늘날까지 그 명맥이 양식화되어 꾸준히 이어지고 있다.사찰의 천장에 그려진 주악비천도나 악기도는 마치 전적으로 불교만의 전통 요소로 이루어지고 변천해 온 것처럼 보일 수 있으나 이미 한반도에는 불교가 유입되기 전부터 장생불사를 기원하는 신선사상이 민간신앙으로 굳게 자리 잡고 있었기 때문에 이 문제에 대한 보다 근원적 추적을 위해서는 불교는 물론, 도교, 유가의 음사상까지 폭넓은 검토를 필요로 한다. 음악은 삼국시대부터 범우주적인 속성이 중시되었고, 소리를 만드는 악기는 신비적이고 초자연적인 신성의 표상이었으며 이러한 음악의 우주적 개념은 조선시대까지도 그 명맥을 잃지 않고 이어갔다. 물론 조선시대 사찰건축의 천정에 그려진 주악도와 악기도들은 부정잡예(不淨雜穢)가 없는 청정한 불국토, 즉 서방극락정토를 염원하는 정토사상의 구현을 위해 그려진 도상들임에 틀림없다. 사찰건축에서의 이 같은 음악상징과 악기 심볼리즘은 법화경이 설하는 극적인 장면의 시각적 구현과 청각적 효과를 기대하는 것 외에도 악기와 음악에 부여한 깊고 심오한 형이상학적 정신세계가 표출되어 있다.
Abstract
This study is concerned with the meaning of musical iconology in Buddhist temples as architecture. It aims to explore the lore and origin of musical instruments used as symbols in traditional temples, especially in the Korean peninsula, that connected the early Mahayana Buddhism from the Chinese continent to the Japan Islands. Beside any doctrinal differences in Buddhism between Mahayana and Hynayana, musical allegory in Buddhist paintings in architecture may be one of the Mahayana’s particular qualities. This is because music is not only a symbol of Paradise in Northern Buddhism, but also a means of service to the Buddha as well. This tradition has been an implicit success for almost two millennia, and has never been scholarly enlightened with an iconological point of view so far. As the main theme of musical allegory in temples was believed to be a genuine heritage of Buddhism, the influence from the Confucian and Taoistic ideas of celestial music and the cosmic notion of musical instrument seems to have been overlooked. In this paper some literal evidences in musical iconology will be examined in terms of musical cosmology and cosmogony.
