Abstract
The objective of this article is to reorient the study of photojournalism reporting of mainstream newspapers by advocating the development of a theory of visual rhetoric. A key premise will be that pictures are not merely analogues to visual perception but symbolic artifacts constructed from the conventions of a particular culture. The argument will turn to the visual arts, as well as to anthropology and the psychology of pictorial perception. To illustrate the need to rethink the role of imagery in photojournalism, especially concerning socio-political minority groups, I reexamined the assuptions guiding past research. The goal of my literature review is to highlight a prvasive way of thinking about images that is, in fact, at odds with developmental, cross-cultural, and historial evidence. The proposed framework is more consistent with the processes underlying pictorial perception, more closely parallels what real photographs are actually like, and thus, promises more explanatory power for the study of reader responses.
