Abstract

The Spirit King Sculptures including the Ten Spirit Kings on the pedestal ofEastern Wei Stele of No. 543 owned by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, can be verified in the caves and the Buddhist stele of Northern Dynasty. The studies on the origin of the names, the meaning of iconography, and theformal categorization across of the spirit king sculptures have been accomplishedthrough the several previous researches that Emanue Edouard Chavannes hadinitiated, telling that the Spirit Kings held a unique position as an iconographyof guarding the scriptures of Buddha in the period of Northern and SouthernDynasty. The spirit kings, especially among others, represented themselves to be anew trend as a guardian spirit of the law of Buddha in the period of NorthernQi Dynasty. However, the whole procession of how the spirit kings wereparticularly chosen among other guardians appearing in the Buddhist scripturesor any concerned with it has been hardly found in the previous researches. Besides, more specific interpretation can be asked about the background ofwhich the spirit kings appear dressed in the style of western region found inthe caves and the white marble sculptures near the capital region. This study reexamined the previous studies on the spirit kings and drew thefollowing conclusions of characteristics of iconography, categorizing the posture, the dress style, and the kinds to better understand in general the iconographyof the guardian spirit in the late of 6th century by reexamining and comparingthose of Northern Qi Dynasty and Northern Zhou Dynasty. First, the characteristics of the spirit kings can be classified as followed. The spirit kings appeared intensively from the period of Eastern Wei to Northern QiDynasty that is assumed of its period and central region, Henan and Hebeiwhere Handan and Anyang belonged. The spirit kings of Northern Qi Dynasty was found to have kept the range oftraditional ten spirit kings. In the case of white marble sculpture, placing eightdeity sculptures on the pedestal tended to be salient, but the order of placementwas found to be inconstant. On the other hand, while the spirit kings in theKungHsien Cave and Eastern Wei Stele of No. 543 wear a heavenly garmentand a long skirt, that of Northern Qi Dynasty wears a long upper garment witha round neck and narrow sleeves with a belt, pants and boots. This study interpreted these dress styles had gotten influenced by those ofWestern Region, more concretely, the Sogdians, that had advanced then towardsthe central field of China. The record of documents that many temples of westernregional styles were constructed around the capital area of Yecheng supportsthe interpretation and the interests and constant concerns about the westerncustoms that prevailed in the Northern Qi Dynasty reflected the result that thenew style of spirit kings were produced and became popular. The spirit kings influenced by the western style during the political chaos inthe late 6th century came to expand its peculiar role of guarding the scripturesof Buddha to the emperor and the country as a nation, leading to be expressedin the Xiangtangshan Caves and Lingquansi Caves. Furthermore, the ones inthe white marble sculptures produced by the civilians explain that the missionof guarding the country had been also expanded to the private groups. Thegeneral trend of Northern Qi Dynasty would be possibly consented, consideringthe producers' or patrons' enthusiastic attitude of acceptance and diversityopen to the western style. Contrast to Northern Qi Dynasty, in the Northern Zhou Dynasty, it is foundthat the traditional guarding iconography, the monster images in the HanDynasty's stone with carved figures had been continued its popularity. In thepedestal of Images of Buddha in Xian, the mixed iconography with the appearance of monster images and the characteristics of the spirit kings can befound. The procedure of the guarding iconography of Northern Zhou unfoldingthe monster images can be explained that it shows one side of the NorthernZhou with reactionism and conservatism as are confirmed in the Images ofBuddha and Bodhisattva.
