Abstract

This paper examines the musical function of "Ha5" in Kyŏnggŭnjigok (敬勤之曲), Chongmyo Cheryeak (宗廟祭禮樂), Yuhwanggok (惟皇曲), Chŏngdongbanggok (靖 東方曲), and Nakyangch’un (洛陽春). It analyzes the historical records related to "Ha5 (下五)" and "Kung (宮)" (from the five-tone notation), clarifying the characteristics of "Ha5" within this system. The characteristics of "Ha5" in the five-tone notation were analyzed based on occurrence notes, modal names, final tones, and frequency of appearance. The occurrence notes in each piece were mostly distributed within the range of "Ha5" to "Ha1 (下一)" in the five-tone notation (五音略譜), with the lower tonal range serving as the main tonal region. In this system, both "Ha5" and "Kung" can indicate the first note of a scale, but "Ha5" specifically serves this function. However, "Ha5" did not necessarily indicate the final tone, and its frequency of occurrence was unrelated to the musical characteristics. Ultimately, "Ha5" in the five-tone notation represents "Kung" among the three tonal categories—T’akgung (濁宮), Chungsŏng (中聲) Kung (medium-pitched Kung), and Ch’ŏnggung (淸宮) (high-pitched Kung). "Ha5" serves as the first tone within the primary tonal range and functions as the starting note of the scale. On the other hand, the tones indicated as "Kung" in each piece were neither the first note of the scale nor final tones, meaning they lacked a specific musical function. An analysis of the "Sejo Sillok (世祖實錄)" (Annals of King Sejo) and "Akhak Kwebŏm (樂學軌範)" revealed that "Ha5" was established as the representative tone of "Kung" as part of the process of systemizing the five-tone notation.
