Abstract

Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) perform various tasks, such as weight drops, ballast water adjustments, and sample collections, which affect their mass and buoyancy. This study introduces a six-degree-of-freedom dynamic modeling method that accounts for scenarios involving variable mass and buoyancy. The ballast water intake and discharge mechanism is represented as a change in buoyancy, while weight drop operations are modeled as changes in the UUV’s mass. Since the ballast water moves with the UUV, it must be included in the inertial terms. The mass and moments of inertia, including the ballast water, are considered only in the inertial calculations. Unlike conventional dynamic models, the proposed variable dynamic model incorporates inertial forces, gravity, buoyancy, and forces resulting from changes in mass and moments of inertia as dynamic variables. Simulations for weight drop and ballast water intake scenarios were conducted using this dynamic model, with fixed propeller revolution rates and control fin angles. In both scenarios, vertical forces such as gravity and buoyancy varied. During the turning test, dropping a small weight equivalent to 0.25% of the UUV’s mass resulted in minimal change to horizontal motion, but the heave velocity and pitch angle decreased, indicating a shift in the depth trajectory. In the ballast water intake simulation, taking in ballast water equal to 2% of the UUV’s mass increased the heave velocity to a level comparable to the surge velocity, resulting in a significant angle of attack motion in the vertical plane.
