Abstract
Maintaining stable radio links inside ships, which are primarily composed of metallic structures, is challenging due to reflections, interference, and diffraction that lead to significant multipath issues. This study explores the viability of an onboard wireless network utilizing a metal-surface wave communication approach. We implemented a testbed on a coastal passenger vessel, establishing two core nodes as the backbone and installing devices at seven measurement points. A multilayer measurement toolkit, including Ping, TCP, and UDP via iperf3, collected data on latency, throughput, and packet loss at 30-minute intervals over an extended period. We conducted a statistical analysis using mixed-effects models with an AR(1) correlation structure to assess the net effects of environmental factors. The results demonstrate that in shipboard environments characterized by dense metal, watertight bulkheads, and curved structures—where traditional wireless methods struggle—the proposed technique can effectively serve as a reliable wireless backbone and local network. Additionally, the influence of environmental conditions on performance was found to be both predictable and manageable, facilitating adaptive operation for robust networking aboard ships.
