Abstract

This paper examines the intersection between architecture and art that occurred in Japan during the late 1940s and 1950s by focusing on Tange Kenzō’s design of Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building(1953-1957) and Kagawa Prefectural Office Building (1955-1958), in which Okamoto Tarō and Inokuma Gen’ichirō produced mural paintings respectively. The theme synthesis of the arts emerged in Japanese architectural and artistic thinking in the postwar years concurrently with the international debate, which was fueled principally by Le Corbusier. The postwar call for synthesis is one of the primary routes along which the social roles and public dimension of architecture and art are discussed in the reconstruction context. This study delineates a shift of emphasis in the collaborative efforts from the universal discourse of humanism, internationalism, and people of the immediate postwar era to the specified interest in Japanese identity and tradition of the 1950s.
