Abstract
Chung Kyu’s ceramic murals installed on Kim Swoo-geun’s buildings, such as O-yang Building(1963), Woo-suk University Hospital(1963), and Freedom Center(1964), can be situated at the intersection between an utopian aspiration of the synthesis of the arts and the modernization projects of traditional Korean ceramics. If the exposed concrete walls of modernist buildings provided Chung Kyu with a stage for experimenting a new potential of ceramic arts, colorful mural works imbued Kim Swoo-geun’s international style building with a sense of vitality and locality. In this paper, I would like to examine the collaborations between Chung Kyu and Kim Swoo-geun within the growing interest in folk art in Korean art and architecture scenes, with Choi Sunu as the central figure. It is my contention that Kim Swoo-geun’s fascination with Korean folk art constituted an essential element of his understanding of Korean tradition, which would eventually offer a source of inspiration for his architectural thoughts. The collaborations between art and architecture through mural works, however, were short-lived. Entering the 1970s, Kim Swoo-geun stopped designing concrete building in Brutalist style, which offered a background for ceramic murals, and Chung Kyu could not continue his ceramic work due to his premature death in 1971. Nevertheless, their collaborations occupied a significant place in art and architecture history in that they attempted to contribute to urban spaces with the increasing awareness of publicness.
