‘민화’의 대안으로서의 ‘장식화’ - 파리국립기메동양미술관 소장 이우환 컬렉션을 중심으로

본 연구는 일반적으로 사용하는 민화라는 명칭의 한계를 지적하고 ‘장식화’라는 대안을 제시한다. 두루마리 그림의 감상화와는 달리 궁궐이든 양반 혹은 일반 평민의 집이든 실제 공간을 장식하기 위해서 그려진 모든 그림을 포괄적으로 ‘장식화’라고 명명하고 파리 기메미술관 소장 이우환 컬렉션을 중심으로 그 타당성을 고찰한다. 1970년대부터 조선 장식화에 큰 관심을 가지고 수집해 온 이우환은 처음부터 이를 조선 회화의 일부로 보고 이조 회화의 현실을 제대로 반영하지 못하고 전체를 포괄하지 못하는 민화라는 표현에 반대했다. 본고는 현대 작가인 이우환이 보는 장식화에 대한 시각과 수집 과정, 그리고 수집 동기 등을 살펴보았다. 또한 이 논문에서 양식상의 구분 시에는 ‘감상화체’, ‘궁화체’ 그리고 ‘민화체’ 회화라는 표현을 쓰는데 특히 이우환 컬렉션의 다양성 속에서 궁화체도 민화체도 아닌 그림들, 특히 정식 미술교육을 받은 화가가 그려 뛰어난 화풍을 보이면서도 일반 동양화의 규범을 타파하고 그린 창조적이고 현대적인 작품들에 주목한다. 그리고 그동안 다양하게 제안된 명칭들 가운데 장식화라는 표현이 그것이 실제 공간과 관계가 있다는 기능적인 측면에 주목한 표현임을 밝힌다. 이를 위해 이 회화들의 한국 건축과의 유기적인 관계 속에서의 연구가 뒤따라야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This research points out the limitations of the term ‘folk painting (‘Minhwa’)’, and proposes the term ‘decorative painting (Jangsikhwa)’ instead. Indeed the latter term better embraces the diversity of styles of painting during the Joseon dynasty, where those paintings were aimed at being exhibited in public and in private spaces, regardless of the sponsor’s or painter’s social classes. This new proposition is illustrated through a focus on the Lee Ufan collection at the Guimet Museum in Paris. Lee Ufan has collected Korean decorative paintings since the seventies and from the beginning he was against the terminology “Minhwa”, arguing that it did not accurately reflect the reality of these paintings. This paper attempts to describe and analyze his vision, his collecting process, his motivation and the diversity of styles of his collection. For the distinction of styles, the following terminologies could be applied: “the court painting style”, “the literati painting style” and “the folk painting style”. Our focus is on the works situated in the in-between of these categories, painted by talented artists who displayed a great freedom in style, ultimately leaning towards modernity. Among the various possible terminologies, the expression “decorative painting (Jangsikhwa)” is chosen in consideration of its functional aspect and its connection with real space. Thus future research on this topic could be complemented by an architectural study.
