본 논문은 최근 생물학과 생명기술의 발전에 의해 달라진 ‘생명’ 그 자체에 대한 이해의 변화를 살피면서, ‘생명’이라는 키워드로 다룰 수 있는 수많은 논의들 중 최근 미생물을 이용하는 미술가들의 작품을 통해 그들이 제시하는 생명에 대한 독특한 이해를 살펴보고자 한다. 생물학의 발달과 더불어, 인간중심주의를 극복하려는 포스트휴머니즘 논의와 포스트휴먼적 생명이해는 소냐 보멜, 안나 드미트리우, 사샤 스파찰과 같은 바이오아티스트들의 작업의 근거가 되고 있다. 이들의 작업이 지닌 공통점 중 가장 중요한 하나는 생명체 중 가장 작은 박테리아에 관심을 가짐으로써 모든 생명들의 동등함을 생각해보고자 한다는 것이다. 미생물을 이용하는 바이오아트는 다른 바이오아트 작업들과 마찬가지로 미술가와 과학자의 협업 및 공동연구와 실험을 기반으로 하고 있다. 그들은 눈에 보이지 않지만 우리 몸의 일부를 차지하고 있는 박테리아들을 미술작품을 통해 가시화하고, 더 나아가 생물학, 철학, 사회학 등을 포괄하는 다학제적인 접근방식을 통해 그것들의 생물학적, 신체적, 사회문화적 의미를 강조한다. 본 논문에서는 그들의 작업들이 최근 생물학 분야에서 변화된 미생물의 의미와 인간과의 관계를 구체적으로 어떻게 파악하고 다루는지, 그리고 그러한 접근방식들이 어떻게 포스트휴먼의 관점을 나타내는지 고찰한다.
Abstract
If there is one thing different in the recent development of biology and biotechnology, it would be the change in the understanding of ‘life’ itself. Of the many discussions possible with the keyword ‘life,’ I would like to look into the unique understanding of life presented by the artists that use microorganisms in their artworks. Along with the development of biology, a posthumanism argument that is attempting to overcome anthropocentrism, and the posthuman understanding of life are becoming the foundation of the artworks of the artists such as Sonja Bäumel, Anna Dumitriu, and Saša Spačal, who use microorganisms. One of the important commonalities in their artworks is that by taking interest in the smallest bacteria of the living thing, they are emphasizing on the equality among all living thing. Bioart that uses microorganisms are similar with other bioart works in that they base their works on joint researches and experiments between the artist and the scientist. Though microbiomes are not visible to the naked eye, the artists make bacteria that take over a part of our bodies visible and further emphasize on the biological, physical, and socio-cultural meanings through interdisciplinary approaches that include biology, philosophy, sociology and so on. In this essay, I would like to examine how these artists and their works understand and deal with the changed meaning of microorganism and the relationship with humans in the field of biology, and how such approaches demonstrate a posthuman viewpoint.
