Abstract

This paper deals with soteriology for Edo women by examining the iconography of the Kumano Ten-Worlds Mandala and related textual sources. According to previous studies, the iconography of the mandala was based on existing materials such as the Ten-Worlds Diagram, Blood Bowl Sutra, and hell-tour tales, a part of Japanese folk literature. It is noteworthy that the “hill of age,” a traditional visual motif originally meaning longevity or the human path, is depicted in the middle of the mandala as a female version. This intentional iconographic modification imparted a new meaning to the motif-the evanescent life of a woman-and reinforced the existing argument that the Kumano mandala targeted a female audience. This paper also reconstructs the etoki, the Japanese Buddhist practice of explaining images for the Kumano mandala through the investigation of Blood Bowl Sutra and its Japanese commentary. Those texts imply that the Kumano nun preached women’s original sin, the punishment of hell for those women, and their limited salvation through outside help. This s regressive soteriology came from a misogynic perspective of Buddhism of the time. Under this negative view, Kumano nuns used the mandala of hell and life by performing etoki. The nuance of admonition and caution of the performance was an effective strategy of fund-raising for their monasteries.
