Abstract
This research focuses on the photographic projects of landscape by South African black artist Santu Mofokeng (1956-2020). To him who experienced the injustices of apartheid firsthand, the South African landscape was a place of even greater inaccessibility, a place steeped in discrimination, violence, and trauma, and a place where the realities of climate change are seriously felt today. At first, this research examines Mofokeng’s photograph and essays together to discuss how he saw the relationship between the land and history in South Africa. Many of his landscape photograph trace the remnants of apartheid through visits to important sites in South Africa’s history. He also made research trips to take a glimpse into the historical trauma of other countries including the Auschwitz concentration camp. For him, representing landscape through photograph was an outlet to explore history, memory, and identity. Then this research analyzes two projects, Climate Change (2007) and Poisoned Landscapes (2011-2012), which focus on Mofokeng’s interest in climate change. In South Africa, a major contributor to the climate crisis is inherited from a long history of mining industry by the Western power: the degraded lands and abandoned mines that have not been rehabilitated. Mofokeng was very careful to use photographic techniques to ensure that these dangerous environments and the black people in his landscape photograph would not be consumed as spectacle. In conclusion, this research reconsiders the validity of the recently expanded use of the term “Anthropocene” while proposing “Capitalocene” as an alternative. To discuss today’s break of ecosystem, Jason W. Moore’s Capitalocene places the historical and ethical context of power relations surrounding nature, human, and capitalism. This extends the discussion of Mofokeng’s landscape photograph to socio-historical issues and provides a basis for the politics of representation in the age of climate change.
