Abstract
In the 20th century, Chinese art underwent tremendous changes. The most significant change in landscape painting was the introduction of sketching from life. Sketching that realistically depict scenery merged with traditional landscape styles, or replaced them. This study examines Guan Shanyue’s art, who sought a new direction in modern landscape painting in China. Since the 1940s, Guan Shanyue actively expressed the reality of homeland, suffering from Japanese invasion, in landscape paintings, and while traveling to various remote regions, he captured topographic landscapes and realistic figures in his paintings. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Socialist Realism introduced from the Soviet Union emerged as a new artistic principle. Painters had to combine important political events or socialist construction scenes in landscape painting. In 1958, Guan Shanyue produced Leap forward of Mountain Village in the form of a long handscroll. In this magnificent work, he effectively combined the panoramic landscape scenes of the four seasons with the numerous people engaged in construction and agricultural activities. While inheriting the handscroll format of the ancient landscape, he expresses the natural environment newly remodeled by humans. While following the tradition of including tiny figures in the landscape, he depicts vivid scenes of daily life in new China. In this way, his landscape painting captured the class consciousness and partisanship required by Socialist Realism, and became a new milestone of modern landscape painting.
