Abstract
This paper examines the ideological meaning that Chinese abstract art was imbued with by Mao Zedong’s Chinese Communist Party (CCP), traces the changes in the CCP’s official stances toward abstract art throughout the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and analyzes the reasons for those changes in the sociopolitical context of the time. I will first investigate how Mao’s Party regarded abstract art, and then scrutinize how Deng Xiaoping’s Party altered and/or succeeded that official stance toward abstract art in relation to the sociopolitical issues during the late 1970s and 1980s. Last, I will demonstrate that the Party’s loosened censorship on abstract art reflects the requests for artistic freedom, and by extension, the democratic values, of the people. This paper will ultimately reveal not only the way and the reason that abstract art became an ideologically sensitive issue in the PRC but also the way that abstract art relates to the ideology and sociopolitical situations of its society.
