Abstract
This study examines the effects of phonological processing ability-phonological awareness, phonological coding and retrieval of phonological code- on the reading ability of young children. Thirty-two 5-year olds were administered the Phonological Awareness Test (syllable deletion, syllable blending, syllable discrimination, phoneme deletion, phoneme blending, phoneme discrimination), the Phonological Coding Test, the Retrieval of Phonological Code Test and a Reading Test (to test their understanding of words, sentences, and sentence comprehension). The results indicate that the total score on phonological awareness and that of retrieval of phonological code were in significant correlation with the overall scores on reading. While phonological awareness was the best predictor in predicting both overall reading ability and word reading, retrieval of phonological code was also a significant variable. However, for sentence reading, only phonological awareness proved to be a significant predictable variable.
