Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine and describe preschool children’s metasocialization by apprisingtheir conceptions of their social situation in terms of moral, social-conventional and personal situations. Seventy-eight children, 3 to 5 years of age, who were enrolled in a kindergarten in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, Korea, were interviewed for this study. The results yield the following observations and generalizations: Children do not distinguish among social-conventional situations as being either bad or moral ones but they clearly distinguish both types of situations from personal ones. In addition, children take into account their perceptions of peers and adult authorities when making judgments in moral situations. They rely on social custom and organizational norms when making judgments about social-conventional situations and they defer to their personal preferences when making judgments in personal situations. Furthermore, the children granted a decision locus to themselves. Many children, for example, conceived of themselves as decision-makers. Finally, age played a prominent role in the children’s conceptions of social situations: the younger the children were, the less likely they were to make any distinctions among the three social situations.
