Abstract
This study examines the influence of gender-typed toys and children's gender on children's play behaviors and emotion expression. Twenty-three preschool children, all 5 years of age, were observed in free play settings. Results reveal significant gender differences between boys and girls in toy preference, play behaviors and emotion expression. Boys preferred masculine toys and girls preferred feminine toys. However, most children played with countergender-typed toys as well. Boys displayed more negative behaviors than did girls, while girls expressed positive emotions more than did boys. But, in contrast to previous studies, boys showed more positive emotions and engaged in pretend play when they played with feminine toys. These results are discussed in terms of gender role development and suggestions for early childhood education are given.
