Abstract
This study was conducted to ascertain how a self-regulation ability enhancement program could effect 4 to 5 year-old children’s recognition of their cognitive and emotional regulation abilities. Subjects were 123 children, 99 of whom had no demonstrated aggression problems, while 34 of the group demonstrated high degrees of aggression. Before the start of the program, researchers had given self-regulation ability measuring criterion and aggression measuring criterion to the teachers in order to classify make-up of the sample population. A testing group of 77 participated in the self control ability enhancement program and a control group of 56 participated in the regular kindergarten program. To measure the effect of the Self-Regulation Program, pre and post tests were administered using a two-way ANCOVA based on the covariate. The pre and post testing results show that the self-regulation ability enhancement program had a positive effect on the lower 5 variables of cognitive regulation for all the childrenparticipating in the program. The program’s effect on emotional self-regulation was also positive for all, including those with high aggression. Moreover, the post-test revealed a reduction of physical and linguistic aggression in the children who had demonstrated high aggression. Thus, increasing cognitive and emotional self-regulation abilities brings about a positive synergistic effect: the reduction of physical and linguistic aggressive behavior.
