Abstract

The present study described the relationship between amount of nighttime sleep duration and behavior problems in children. Parental ratings of children’s sleep and behavioral problems on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were obtained from a large-scale longitudinal study of 2012 panel study on Korean Children(PSKC). This cross-sectional study examined nighttime sleep duration from parent’s reports of their 4-year-old child’s typical weekday bed and wake times. The ANCOVA for nighttime sleep durations on behavior problems controlling for demographic variables such as child’s gender, birth order, mother’s and father’s education, family income was found to have statically significant effects. Major results indicated that shorter nighttime sleep duration in 4-year-old children was associated with higher levels of externalizing behavior problems. Shorter nighttime sleep duration were also related to higher scores of CBCL DSM-oriented Affective problems and ADHD problems based on parental report
