Abstract
This study examined the modality of response, function, and types of gestures between Korean and Japanese children aged 2 to 5 years old. The subjects included 94 Korean and 74 Japanese children. To measure children’s gestures, we used a picture-naming task based on Lexical Production Task (Pettenati, Sekine, Congestrì, & Volterra, 2012). Collected data were analyzed using descriptive, t-test, and ANOVA statistics. Our results showed that there were differences in the modality of gestures, function, and types of gesture by age. In both countries, older children were more likely to respond using only vocal language when compared to younger children, and there were less likely to use vocal and gestures together. Also, older children showed less frequent reinforcing, supplementary, and deictic gestures than younger children in both countries. A significant difference among countries was observed only in representational gestures, in which frequency was higher in Korean children than Japanese children. In conclusion, the modality of response, function, and types of gestures differed by age group but not by the culture, which supports that gesture may be universal.
