Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the direct and indirect effects of parents’ expectation, attitude towards mathematics, and mathematical interaction in predicting children's mathematics achievement. For this purpose, a total of 361 children aged 3 to 5 years old and their parents completed a survey. The findings from structural equation analysis indicated that parents’ expectations and mathematical interaction (e.g., counting objects, measurement for length and weight, etc.) predicted children’s mathematic achievement after controlling for parents’ socio-economic status and children’s age. However, parents’ mathematics attitudes did not predict children’s math achievement. In addition, parents’ mathematical interactions mediated their expectations of children’s math skills and children’s actual mathematic achievement, but did not mediate parents’ attitudes to mathematics and children’s math achievement. In conclusion, the ways to support mathematical interactions of parents with their children in order to improve children’s mathematical ability are discussed.
