Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between preschoolparent communication and children’s math interest. Specifically, this study aims to examine the mechanism through which how preschool-parent contact is associated with children’s math interest mediated by parents’ mathematical interaction. A total of 204 parents of children aged 4-5 years completed a parental survey. The results from structural equation modeling indicated that the frequency of parents’ mathematical interaction (i.e., learning simple sums, and naming written numbers) predicated children’s math interest, but the quality of parents’ mathematical interaction did not predict children’s math interest. Furthermore, the frequency of parents’ mathematical interaction fully mediated the relationship between preschool-parent communication and children’s math interest. Implications for developing a system that supports preschool-parent communication and parents’ mathematical interactions were discussed.
