Abstract
This research aims at exploring early childhood teachers’ understanding of health education and care since COVID-19. The participants were 8 teachers working at early childhood education institutions located in S city. The data were collected based on in-depth interviews, placed into categories focusing on common subjects, and then compared and analyzed. The results are as follows. First, teachers were aware that children and teachers had experienced psychological and emotional difficulties, feeling isolated, afraid and anxious during the COVID-19 era. Accordingly, they indicated the need for supporting children’s and teacher’s mental health. Second, play-centered health education and care were recognized as important, in the organizational environment which has changed since COVID-19. Third, teachers realized their requirement to have professional competency in health education and care after COVID-19. Fourth, as the society developed a higher interest in health care and well-being since COVID-19, teachers perceived the importance of better communication to connect the organization and the families, as well as to promote their own health care. This study is meaningful in that it examined the increased social awareness and value of health and well-being through the early childhood teachers’ voice at this time when the pandemic is over. It discussed the ways to minimize the health threats in the early childhood educational institutions where education and care coexist and to support young children’s health and development.
