Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate moderated mediating effect of emotional regulation and maternal emotion coaching between negative emotionality and aggression of young children. A total of 299 pairs of children aged 3 to 5 and their mothers participated, from Seoul and Gyeonggi area. Child’s negative emotionality, emotional regulation and maternal emotion coaching were evaluated by the mother. Child’s aggression was evaluated by the teacher. Data were analyzed using t-tests, Cohen’s d, and moderated mediation Model 14 in the Process macro for SPSS. The results are as follows. First, there were significant gender differences in emotion regulation and aggression. Girls showed higher emotion regulation ability and lower aggression than boys did. Second, maternal emotion coaching moderated the mediating effect of emotion regulation between child’s negative emotionality and aggression. The effect of child’s negative emotionality on aggression through poor emotion regulation ability was aggravated when maternal emotion coaching level was average and below average. These results reveal the protection effect of maternal emotion coaching on the relationship between negative emotionality and aggression through emotion regulation ability.
