Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze how fathers perceive their young children’s risk and risk-taking play. For this aim, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 fathers, who actively participated in father-participation activities and played with their children at a daycare center in City D. The results are as follows. First, the risk experienced by fathers of young children in early childhood was ‘part of life’, and ‘something learned through experience’. Second, the risk-taking play experienced by fathers was ‘fun play,’ ‘play that stimulates challenge and desire for achievement,’ and ‘play that finds a way to cope’. Therefore, risk is an inevitable part of life and interaction with the world and a necessary condition for survival. Risk-taking play is essential for young children’s health and well-being. This study indicates that young children’s safe risk-taking and participation in risk-taking play should be permitted and supported in all educational environments, both at early childhood education institutions and at home.
