Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the doctrinal and historical significance of inclusion of Nirvāṇa (nibbāna) and exclusion of suffering (dukkha) in the Northern Buddhist tradition by comparing the Southern and Northern Buddhist interpretations on the Early Buddhist teaching of impermanence (anicca), suffering (dukkha) and non-self (anattā). According to Early Buddhism, everything which comes into being bear the three characteristics, namely, impermanence, suffering and non-self. A typical example is the following passage from a discussion of the five aggregates: “Form is impermanent. Because it is impermanent, it is suffering. Since dhammas are impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, they are devoid of a Self.” However, the three characteristics are individually scattered throughout the Early Buddhist canon and there was no specific formula for covering them. Therefore, the Buddhists collected and summarized them in terms of the three characteristics (ti-lakkhaṇa) or the three Dharma seals during the period of Sectarian Buddhism. The three characteristics, which are identical with the general characteristics (sāmañña-lakkhaṇa), form the essential basis for understanding the Buddha’s scheme of emancipation (vimokkha) and Nirvāṇa. The Dharma seals (dharma-uddāna) were used as standards to determine whether or not a Sūtra or a doctrine was valid; if it met these standards, it was determined to be a valid Buddha’s teaching (buddha-vacana). The Dharma seals were also used as flags or slogans for propagating the essentials of Buddhist Philosophy. In the Mahāyāna tradition, suffering (dukkha) is added to the three Dharma seals to form the four Dharma seals. Some Mahāyāna Buddhists regarded the three or four Dharma seals as a Hīnayāna concept; they established instead the one Dharma seal (一實相印), which was the principle of the ultimate reality, or the true aspect of all phenomena (諸法實相). In this way, the Early Buddhist principle of impermanence, suffering and non-self has been interpreted in somewhat different ways. Nevertheless, the above formulas as found in the Southern and Northern Buddhist traditions are basically to describe the general and true characteristics of all phenomena. What is more, non-self, which is the teaching peculiar to Buddhism, is find its place in their formulas. In this sense, we can safely say that all the above formulas show the way to Nirvāṇa, which is the ultimate goal of Buddhism.
